First Steps Are Never Taken Only Once

Milena Kukurekovic

“Life is not measured by the number of breaths we take, but by the number of moments that take our breath away.”

This is one of Smarty’s most beloved quotes. I’ll be happy to share one similar that, somewhat, comes quite neat with this topic at the end of the post :)

We, actually, take first steps quite many times in our lives. First actual steps, first steps in school (kind of traumatic ones for some :), baby steps whenever we start a new project, first steps down the aisle…

For most of those occasions, people around are happy for us, but as for the first steps as newlyweds the greatest happiness is in our hearts. The first and, kind of important, celebration of our upcoming future as a couple is the first dance. Those dancing steps will, certainly and quite gracefully, celebrate the lovely journey you’re about to embark upon together.

Being a former professional dancer and choreographer, personally, I am simply in love with these moments. So let’s talk about that dance for a bit…

5,6,7,8…

This is when you get extremely creative. People around the world have the loveliest, most romantic, funniest, or sometimes weirdest and most controversial ideas on the first dance.

If you favor moving to the beat, like to dance, and feel beyond divine when dancing, you are probably about to pick your favorite love song and just let it be, let it flow, let the melody take over.

Or you might like to do something a bit more choreographed, like a serious performance, and hire a dance teacher to help you create something more interesting according to your dancing abilities.

Everyone seems to find their way for this dance. I’ve had some of the most creative, unthinkable ideas and performances to work on. I remember a couple who came to my studio and they both said: “We need a dance, yet, we are everything but dancers. Can you think of something? :)” So they chose Something Stupid by Frank Sinatra and we started on a journey of learning how to simply move to the rhythm (it’s bachatta if someone is interested to know). And they danced perfectly, even though I was late to the reception to supervise - my bad! Sorry M&N, you know I still love you both…

I think I will never forget a couple that came and had the weirdest idea I’ve ever heard. The groom has a twin brother, and the bride thought of a theatrical performance. Certainly, anything but ordinary. They wanted to dance to You’re The One That I Want from Greace, but the idea was for her to come out with the groom’s twin brother at first, kiss him and then “realize, that he is not the one!” That’s when the groom swoops in and they all dance to the song together. I don’t know to this day how I managed to finish the choreography but it was successful and funny at the end, which was kind of the point of all.

Just go with the feeling

Doesn’t matter how good of a dancer you are, the point of everything is for you to just act as you feel, and go with the flow. Make sure you enjoy that moment as much as you can and it will all turn out amazing. Dance is nothing without the energy, and when just married, there’s no doubt you will exude love and passion. We are all at our best when surrounded by love.

If nothing else, you can always start a Penguin Dance, just watch out for the dress, heels or a slippery floor…

And as I promised:

“Life is not about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain…”
